There’s one thing I hear repeatedly from visitors and friends alike; the sense of peace and serenity they feel upon entering our nursery and gardens. The sounds of traffic slips away and you can hear the wind blowing through the trees and our chickens happily clucking along as they search for food or peck at greens.  If the escape from the city isn’t enough, however, here are some other great reasons: 

 

Sometimes it’s hard to gauge how big a plant can grow or spread from pictures alone, or what all those different light levels actually mean. Come see first hand what all these things actually look like in a home setting and how you can fit them into your plans.

 

Our Gardens have a combination of growing techniques from perennial garden islands (or “guilds”) to annual garden beds and a combination of both. See how we plant in different canopy levels: using taller, reaching plants with shrub-type plants beneath, vining plants between, edible ground covers as “mulches” to support our fruit trees, the soil, and ourselves all at the same time, and root crops beneath it all (and incorporating small livestock too!).

 

As we go along the tour, I’ll pick you samples of all those delicious edible perennials we have growing here, so you can try for yourself and decide if it’s something you’d like to add to your home.

Skip the shipping costs and pick up your plants right here on site! (You can even Check Out Our Shop before you arrive!) While our potted plant stock is still building, many of the items we offer can be harvested for you as-needed, cut or dug up for you at the time of your tour (such as shampoo ginger roots or mexican sunflower cuttings).

 

Just as the seasons do, things are always changing here at J.O.T Nursery and Gardens. Sometimes the property will be overflowing with sky-high waterfalls of bright yellow Mexican sunflowers; other times spikes of brilliant pink ginger flowers are bursting from their bushes. Sometimes there will be more, or less, of particular items growing in our beds (so think about coming back again for another tour during a different season!).

 

I don’t, and never will, tout my gardens to be perfect – because life is busy, messy, and complicated. But one of the things I want you to see is how you can live your regular life, work your job and take care of your family, and still grow your food forest. I want you to see that it’s okay for things to not be perfect, and yet they can still be beautiful and productive. So yes, you’ll see some of my messes from me propagating plants, half-starting a new island guild, or pre-building some new crazy project I have. But you’ll also be able to walk along our winding paths to see the lush, beautiful, successful, productive plant islands, and garden beds that sustain us, our livestock, our soil, and the thriving ecosystem that these plants bring in (butterflies, hummingbirds, and more!) and everything that brings us such joy!

 

I wouldn’t recommend wearing heels, and often encourage people to wear close-toed shoes such as sneakers or garden boots/muck boots. You’ll be walking along paths but remember, this is a LIVING system – so there will be bugs!

 

Tours usually last anywhere from 1 hour to 2.5 hours, depending on how many people are in the group and how engaged you are in asking questions and learning! Tours will be with your group alone with me, so you will have my full attention.

 

**Please Note**  This is my home, (part of our purpose is to show a living example of a home food forest) and we live in a very peaceful little piece of paradise. Please be respectful to the others in our little community-in-the-woods as you’re arriving, and watch out for animals and children! There will almost ALWAYS be deer, sandhill cranes, or cats on the sides of the road, eyeing you as you drive by! You will be welcome to use my bathroom if needed.
